Hey SDH - I read a review by you on a Boston Garden show yesterday where you said you were from Boston, and I'm wondering if we might have ever known each other? I'm from the South Shore and saw most of my shows around New England from 79-82 ... just curious.

I lived to the West of Boston (waltham, somerville and others) and didn't start seeing the boys until 83, so we probably missed each other.

I moved to LA in November 1982 (a day after seeing the JGB at the New Haven Opera House), so you are probably right. I bet you saw some shows I wish I'd seen, and vice-versa. The Portland and Augusta shows from 1985 are a couple that I really like.

I think my favorite Maine experience was seeing the shows at Oxford Plains. The venue itself was absolutely horrendous (dilapitated race track in the middle of nowhere), but the quality of the shows more than made up for it.

If I had to pick an area show/s that I was too late for would be the Cape Cod 79 shows.

I have a not-great audience recording of one of those Oxford Plains shows, and it is a smoker.

Cape Cod 1979 were some smoking shows - little known fact about 10/27/79: they actually started early because they found out when they got to the venue that they had to stop by 11:00 sharp (we missed Jack Straw), and how many bands in the world would do that, as opposed to just skipping a couple of songs? The second night the crowd was hip to the new start time.

I don't know how long ago this matrix showed up, but it's new to me ...

I also am from the greater Boston area and started seeing shows in 80 until about 84 or 85... hard to keep track of time during those years. I also use to see Max Creek alot out in Worcester and in Ct. I traveled during tours with a group that was comprised of people from Ct.,Me.,NYC.,and N.J.
Do you recall the Shakedown St. Bus ? They were out of Peabody I think. I hitched a ride back from Syracuse with them once.
I am attaching a pic of the crew I use to tour with...be interesting to see if anyone is recognized.
Anyways,.. guess I should qualify for this thread...
Outside... Saratoga/Meriweather post/Hershey Park/ Red Rocks
..not in that order.
Inside... Spectrum/Augusta CC/Richmond

Hated... Long Island/ Brendon Byrne and Pittsburgh.

Happy Trails,

Great snap! No, I'm pretty sure I don't know these people, but it's a fun picture. Ditto the Shakedown bus; I don't think I ever crossed paths with it.

Nassau - I saw 2 runs of shows there: May '81 and April '82, and always liked the place. The area was pretty funky, though. We had a scary experience at a West Hempstead motel in 1981: people banging on our door in the middle of the night yelling "fire," but really just trying to scare us into opening the door so they could rob us ...

That was you - we weren't trying to rob you we just needed a light!

;)

Saw alot of Nassau shows and always had a good time, those big giant horse cops could be pretty intimidating though.

I guess my frame of mind was augmented (and not by the acid,..well...maybe a little) but my ride, a really sweet woman named Annie, got busted there by two undercover cops that persisted in asking her to sell them a dose after she had told them 3 times she only had one left and it was for her for the next night. She relented and wound up on the bus,..the wrong bus... the one with wire mesh in the windows. Just so happend that she was from England orginally and still was an alien status wise although she was married and had 2 teenagers and had been in the states for 20 years. They were talking deportation and we had to get a couple from the clan to put their house up to post bond. Never went back to Nassua after that..we unkindy refered to it as Shakedown St.
Guess it coulda happend anywhere. I once had left my tent in philly to go to a nearby hotel to take a shower and came back to find my tent/sleeping bag and backpack gone...that sucked. Also went on a bus into So. Philly for Chinese food with a bunch of heads and we musta been on the wrong corner or looked to freakish but hoodlums came outta everywhere to assault us and then proceeded to throw rocks and bottles at the bus as we tried to exit.
truth be told tho the way cool stuff far outweighed the nightmares. Guess thats why I kept at it ;-)

Wow ... those are some harrowing stories - my touring days were mercifully free of law enforcement. I was only out there a short time - late 79 to late 82 - and I think that kind of thing became much worse in the mid to late 80's. For me, the fun and wonderful moments FAR outweighed the weird/negative ones. That's not the first story I've heard of non-dealer heads being baited into sharing the stash, then being busted for dealing. Pretty scummy.

Also saw Max and Slipknot (not the metal band from Iowa) many time at Harper's Ferry in Allston and down in Providence a few times.

Love the picture, brings back some really good memories. I think I do recall the Shakedown Bus. Don't suppose you'd have any recollections of a green VW microbus with "OUCH!!" in large letters painted over a big dent on the front?

Man I wish I had dropped just a little less acid back then. The green bus sounds familiar, especialy the "OUCH".
But then again I ran with a couple from the DC area that rear ended us with thier white VW microbus which put a dent in the front of it and I may be confusing things...lol.
All I really do know is that the time I spent touring and being with what I called my "tour family" was very special and I truly miss those friends and that time in my life.
I had lost contact with all of them many years ago.
I guess like most things.. a chorus from a song is applicable here and I'll leave you with that.

The wheel is turning
and you can't slow down
You can't let go
and you can't hold on
You can't go back
and you can't stand still
If the thunder don't get you
then the lightning will

I saw Max Creek several times in Amherst or Northampton MA but I can't remember the name of that terrific club.

This is a completely different thread, but my favorite ever Dead vehicle was a forest green Pacer with MA license plate TERAPN - saw that one in Lewiston and at least a couple of other places.

Pearl street. I believe I saw NRBQ there once.

I heard max creek played an anniversary show at some resort in the berkshires this summer. Bring your own booze is the resorts motto. I'm not kidding. Did anyone go to that?

Hmm,.. are you refering to Camp Creek ? I've been to a couple of em but not for many years. They're holding it in upstate NY now-a-days at the same place the Harley rendevouz is held.
